Production log #3: Filettatura di Scarto!

It's time, folks!

Time for another song release! And this time, it's kind of a funny one, with Italian lyrics and zero synthesizers!

"But Captain!" we hear you asking. "Why is thing do that?"

Well, you see, thing is do that because Filettatura di Scarto came about through a bit of unique inspiration. It all started one day at work. We're employed as an industrial fitter, working at a plant producing LPG fittings, burners, regulators and the like.

So, one day, we got a shipment of ball valves from an italian parts  supplier, with threads in 'em. As in, the ones you screw stuff into. Which we attempted to do, but much to our chagrin, the threads were pretty badly cut, meaning we could barely fit anything into there.

That then lead to us having to do a bunch of extra work, recutting those threads, making a mess of filings and generally taking a bunch of extra time for an otherwise simple work order.

So, in jest, we said that we should call our next song "[italian supplier] is daft and smells!". Obviously we couldn't do that, because [italian supplier] would sue us into the ground if we did, and also, eh, everyone has a bad production run every now and then. No need to get all rude about it.

BUT! It gave us another thought:

You know how often times, people will kinda sing and clap along to songs in foreign languages, not really knowing what they're singing along to?

Well, what if someone made a song with italian lyrics, but those exotic, romantic-sounding lyrics were actually someone complaining about a bad shipment of LPG fittings? Eh?

Thus, "Filettatura di Scarto" was born.

Which means "Scrap thread", by the way. 😜

So yes, the whole thing is very tongue-in-cheek. We generally wanted to make a new tune with a prominent double-bass, and from there it developed, as musical pieces tend to do.

The Bass is MIDI, mind you. It's Native Instruments' "Session Bassist". Really wonderful plugin to use. However, all of the percussion is acoustic. The various shakers, guiro, tambourine and even rain stick used in the tune are all recordings from us in the living room. Er, Studio, i mean. 😉

I know it says "default preset", but we fiddled around with it, honest!

The leading duo of trumpet and piano soon joined in, kinda setting the jazzy vibe of the tune in stone, along with our choice of scale, which is C minor blues, if you're interested.

The production process of this tune mainly happened in bursts, or at least it feels like it did. See, while we were actually recording parts for this one, we often got good progress done in each session because we were usually having a great time with it, just jammin' away.

Especially when recording takes of the Italian lyrics, provided by our shadow writer, google translate, we were having an absolute blast, snickering between recordings because of how silly the lyrics are.

(On a side note, the Italian lyrics should actually be somewhat legible in this tune. We translated everything from English to Italian, then from Italian back to English and German, just to check if the lyrics still make sense when translated back to languages we actually know. And we tried to copy the pronunciations from google, too. 😉)

With all that said, Filettatura di Scarto did enter a bit of a phase of slow production after that. There was a period where most of the tune was recorded, but we didn't really wanna call it a day, so we kept sort of fiddling, adding little bits and bobs here and there, and generally just meandering around a bit.

The whole tune, zoomed out. Note the tempo changes up top!

Thankfully, we eventually managed to pick ourselves up, export the tune as a mastering file and get cracking on some final touches, which brings us here, writing this.

The tune is finished and scheduled for release; the promotional shorts are done and scheduled, too. We're writing this blog post and are going to schedule this for release soon, too.

And tomorrow, we hop onto Submithub and try our luck with the curators on there, maybe get the track on some playlists, blogs and the like. Not something we usually bother with nowadays, because our music tends to be a bit too eccentric to do well on there, but with Filettatura di Scarto being a relatively straightforward jazz tune, it  seems like we might hav a fairly good shot with this one. We'll see.

For our next tune, we'll likely do something fairly jazzy/bluesy again, but maybe give it a hint of hip hop, with a more grungy beat, rather than a bright percussion ensemble. At least that's what we've been feeling like doing for a little while. But yeah, things will no doubt develop and evolve on their own once we get cracking on it, as they always end up doing.

For now though, you can find the song here:

YouTube | SoundCloud | Spotify | Bandcamp

We hope you like it, and to finish up, you can find the log we've kept throughout the production process down below.

Thank you for reading and listening, and see you around! 👍

Production Log: 29th of July, 2025

Psst!

Thunder Stag isn't out yet, but we're secretly already laying some plans down for our next tune. We've got a Bassline that we wrote some weeks back, and today at work, we found it a name. It shall be called:

 "Filettatura di Scarto"

..... okay, brief explanation: At work today, we had some bother with some ball valves that had some badly cut threads (the kind you screw things into) in 'em, requiring us to do some rather generous re-threading. As a joke, we said we should make our next song about the supplier of these valves.

Buuuut then it occurred to us that if we gave it an Italian name, very few people would have a clue what it actually means. So why not make a song about that situation, but do it in Italian? Those who speak Italian or bother to look it up would hopefully find it kinda amusing, and those who don't can just enjoy the song for what it is.

So what does "Filettatura di Scarto" actually mean?

"Scrap thread", that's what it means. 😜

  17th of August, 2025

Alrighty, today, we started to do some actual work on this tune!

Played some preliminary piano melodies to get the vibe about right. We also laughed our butt off while recording  wonderfully exotic, italian lyrics as:

"Chi ci ha venduto questa spazzatura?" (Who sold us this garbage?)

and

"Possiamo rispedirlo indietro?" (Can we send it back?)

...... this is a fun project already. 😉

  24th of August, 2025

Right, did a bit of a rewrite on the piano melodics, and we also set the stage for a part where the piano drops a couple of octaves and takes the role of the bass, while the bass in turn goes up a couple octaves and does a neat double bass solo.

Also, we acquired an actually good MIDI accordion, recently. Trying to see if we can fit that into this tune, but so far, we're kinda struggling to find a good place for it. We'll see.

8th of September, 2025

Aww yeah! Finally had a good session working on this tune again, today! We've had a bit of a slump, but today, we showed up, added some trumpets which, in turn, add some much needed zest to the tune! Good times!

13th of September, 2025

Awyep, we've been chipping away in little bits, adding a little phrase here, a bassline there. The tune's nicely coming along! Gonna see if we can get some more italian lyrics in, soon!

20th of September, 2025

Alrighty, after a week of mostly practise, we settled down for some nice work on Fillettatura di Scarto, today! Got some more italian lyrics recorded added a little "sting" to the start of the tune to make it feel a little more dynamic and expanded a little on the piano parts.

One thing that this tune needs now is more length. What we've got feels pretty cool, but it's not even 2 minutes long. Not every song needs to be 5 minutes, but we do wanna aim for ~2:30 to 3 minutes.

28th of September, 2025

Whee! Had one of those inspired days and made a big chunk of
progress! Not only is the tune at an acceptable length, now, but we also got it there with some seriously cool bass and trumpet work!

2nd of October, 2025

Alrighty, we recorded the final vocal parts and wrote a proper ending for the tune! Essentially, it's now entered into it's beta phase. 😉

Now, it's all about finding and adding bits that we feel are missing, as well as doing the whole "production"-thing, giving it all that nice polish, adding some zest and zing and whatnot.

4th of October, 2025

Big progress, today! Felt rather inspired and pretty much finished off the rhythm section of the song, which is made up of a Tambourine, a couple of shakers and our good old mainstay, the Guiro.

20th of October, 2025

Hmm, been making progress on the tune in bits and pieces, recently. We're looking to get a good, big session in soon, to push this tune towards the mastering stage of things. It's no use rushing things, but still. It's actually turned into a really cool piece of music and we wanna get it out there. 😉

In better news, we did end up adding one more instrument: A Rain Stick! Gives some parts of the track a certain "fullness".

25th of October, 2025

Alrighty, we did the thing. We finally finished futzing with the tune and officially got it into the mastering stage. Also, happily, it doesn't really need much done there. Turned out nicely balanced and good-sounding as is.

Tomorrow, we're looking to come up with a cover design and get going on that. Very much on the finish line with this tune!

26th of October, 2025

Alrighty, cover design is done! We leaned into the "italian-ness" with the colours, while also designing it thematically, with threads (the screw kind) all over it. Tried to go for a bit of a 3D effect by blurring the further away ones, though you probably won't be able to tell on the tiny cover thumbnails of streaming services. 😛

Now to finish the tune itself!

2nd of November, 2025

Awright! The tune itself is done, and today we got in some work to prepare release materials. (Shorts and stuff) Currently looking at a likely release on the 21st of November.

Looking to get this one onto Submithub, too. We usually do pretty badly there because we're very genre-noncompliant, but with Filetattura di Scarto!, it feels like we could pretty solidly appeal to the Jazz/Big Band crowds. So we'll give it another shot.

8th of November, 2025

Right, just finished writing the top portion of this Blog post. Most of the preparations are done, and this tune is set for release!
